Arabian opened up their 2012 competitive year in an event with 35 teams entered from all over Great Britain.
The level 4 teams came 2nd and 3rd as did the two level 3 teams.
Level 6 team came 10th and level 5 team came 9th..
With 11 of the 24 girls entering, performing new floor routines it was a day of trials...
Despite losing Poppy Gibbs and Sophie Clarke just prior to the competition to injury the club managed to sustain a prolonged attack on all titles.
Hats off to Spiral Gymnastics club who always maintained one step ahead on the day but overall it was a good day for the club.
With a massive entry of 140 gymnasts, it was 10 year old Molly Harris who was the number one gymnast on the day at level 4 with Katie Wood 3rd and Casey Hodges in 4th.
A big thank you to the coaches from head coach Alan to Sophie, Kirsty and Annie who were up at 6-30am and did not get home until 8pm. Without this strong team the club would not be able to be where it is today.
Not only did they coach all day with no breaks, they also had to Judge each of them as we had no judges from the club to help the girls, so they really worked jolly hard.
Special mention to the injured Poppy Gibbs who was also with the team acting as junior coach/Helper she made sure everyone got their leotard and was there to chat with the very young girls and keep them company. She maybe on crutches but she shows what being a squad gymnast is all about, no injury will prevent her being there for her team mates.
A club thank you to Spalding gymnastics club for holding and inviting Arabian into the Tulips which was a pleasure to attend.

Molly Harris & Katie Wood showed good form to lead their team into an overall 2nd place. Molly picked up two Silvers for her Beam and Floor routine and a 3rd placed Vault, with Katie just missing out with a 4th placed floor exercise, 5th on Bars and 6th on Beam.
Also within their team was Louisa Cuthbert who’s 5th placed floor routine was her highlight and Phoebe Copestake completed the team and she picked up a silver for her stunning Vault. The team were unlucky to not win, but a couple of weak beam scores put paid to their gold chances..
The other team came in 3rd place and this team had veteran competitor Casey Hodges drafted into the team to bolster its chances and she did exactly that picking up silver on Bars and bronze for her floor exercise. In her team she had Millie Barnes flying down the wing as she collected a cracking Bronze on Beam and a 6th place on floor.
Becky Matcham who has been carrying a niggle, struggled to find her best form but nevertheless played a crucial part in getting the team to 3rd place. The final member of this winning team was Tamzin Hill who gained silver on vault and 6th on beam so unlucky to be just outside the medals.
At this level out of the 28 gymnasts Molly was in first place despite scoring lowly on her bars, Katie came 3rd, Casey came 4th and Millie came 6th, Phoebe came 10th, Tamzin 15th, Becky 20th.
Level 6 was our youngest gymnasts representing the club and they were given the hardest task of the day as it was an open age competition so it appeared they were up against some very seasoned gymnasts who towered over the little babes of Arabian. Millie Heathcoate and Emilee Brookes managed to gain 9th place on bars and all the girls Tayla Smyth and Nell Maze Brown all managed to perform a new floor routine which was pleasing to see.
It’s very hard to gauge how well they actually did when they were pitched against such a diversity of ability and ages. It was the only blip in what was otherwise a most wonderful organised and held event. Alan has suggested that next time there is a cap on age or a protection barrier for the likes of 6 to 7 year olds so they are not against girls twice their age and build.
Level 5 also had some very established gymnasts in the arena so it was tough going for the youngsters but there were some good performances on show with Karen McEvaddy making her debut as a competitive gymnast in top squad. Her new floor which she has learned in the last two weeks, looked like it had been established as a routine for more than the two weeks she has had to prepare. Lara Moffat 14th on bars and floor was her highlight out of 48 gymnasts and also 19th on beam. Alisha Patel also gained 19th on beam and Emily Kettle making her first full outing since her arm break last year managed 14th on beam and 19th on floor. Lara came out with the highest score in the team finishing 20th overall
Level 3 saw two teams placed out as a two pronged attack and like the level 4 it worked with both team winning medals and placed on the rostrum in 2nd and 3rd place.
The hardest task was for Hannah Bond, Lucy Johnston and especially Naomi Smith who are really level 4 gymnasts so they had to try and step up their efforts at a higher level. Naomi actually did rather well performing her new floor routine managed a credible 15th place overall with a bronze medal on bars, 10th place on beam and without the slip she would have been in the medals.
Hannah Bond who has yet to completely gain her full ability back after a freak accident last year showed amazing graze in her new floor routine. Overall she was in 4th place and was silver medallist on beam 6th on Vault and 9th on bars so a good all round performance.
Also in this winning team that took 3rd best team of the day, was Sophie Fretwell who won bronze on vault scored steadily all on pieces in what was a good day for Sophie with 11th on beam and 13th on floor.
Amy Deller kindly made the team full by being loaned out by Bicester GC and Amy scored 5th place on bars and 7th on vault…she scored 2nd highest in the team
The 2nd team that was performing cam in 2nd place with Bex Whatmore being the top girl. Bex took Gold on Floor, her first ever show of this new routine and music. 4th on beam and 3rd on vault capped off a steady day for the top gymnast of Arabian.
Ellie Hewitt performed a really stunning twisting vault to take silver and she came 8th on Floor & beam. Beam she took a bad fall leaving a film of skin on the beam and taking her out the individual medal stream. She still scored 2nd best in the team.
Lucy Johnston back for her first event since summer 2010 really did impress coming in 10th place and a 10th position on Bars, 7th on floor showed she is returning to her best. She also managed to stick both back handsprings on the beam and around off to stand.
Tionne Cumberbatch who missed training all week due to a knee problem could only perform at 70% of her normal ability. However she still came 9th overall and a 5th on floor was really good, 7th on Beam and 8th on vault gave her 4th highest scoring team player.
pictures at the bottom largely taken by the gymnasts so excuse the misty shots, but at least you get a taste of atmosphere from the girls point of view. Also on face book under Arabian gymnastics. |
