Poppy Gibbs the 12 year old top squad gymnast at the club broke her ankle in training last night after rolling her ankle on landing a dismount from beam. The popular golden girl of the club has had issues with her ankle on and off for years and this latest "twist" was one too many for her athletic body as it succumbed to the eventuality of G force applied at an angle.
The brave girl who had some tears managed to keep her composure as she was solidly iced by her coach for 20 minutes, but after the swelling was warm after icing he called for an ambulance to take her to hospital as he feared the worst. Poppy has a history for trouble with the ankle so it was of no surprise to the others as they continued to train as Poppy often has to take time out when it starts to ache.

The swelling was not too great to start with and it looked just like a sprain, but as the ice seemed to not take the swelling down it was later a realisation that when its a break the body sends a great deal of blood to the area and thats why it will be warm, even after icing.
So the club is now actually shocked as no one every expected this, especially her coach who stayed with her in the ambulance and throughout the Hospital stay until she was home.
" My first night in gym after moving house and its safe to say i was expecting a nice easy session, not eating my tea at gone midnight after 3 hours in hospital!
I thought it was strange i could not get the swelling to subside with an ice bandage and an ice pack on as well..I dont call paramedics at a whim, i will always do everything possible to assess the situation before making any serious call out. In fact i had actually spoke with her dad to say i thought it was just the usual flare up she suffers with from time to time.
But then ten minutes later i was not happy and called for an ambulance.

Poppy kept her spirits up all the time and was only tearful once in the whole three hours at hospital…but we soon snapped her out of it and she was joking and laughing at the whole scenario of people snoring in the curtained cubicle next door.
Personally I am gutted and floored by this unexpected set back which will keep Pops out of events for at least ten weeks. Her aim is for the Rainbow Challenge on March 25th but my gut feeling is it maybe too soon.
She is a big personality at this club and one thing is for sure she will be in doing conditioning and I, along with all the girls, the coaches and staff we will be happy to see her in the gym….These things happen in our sport and the great thing about being a top gymnast is they have a top attitude and will bounce back twice as quick as a non sporting person. She can sharpen her tea making ability up now for her coach!” |
